AVENGERS: THE COVER CORNER BOXES

by Sean McQuaid

An obvious but oft-overlooked aspect of any Marvel comic book
collection is the little illustration in the top left-hand corner of the
cover, commonly known as the corner box since the illustration is usually
framed in a vertical rectangle (though at times the rectangle has been
replaced by other designs, such as a circular frame or a rectangular strip
that runs the length of the book's spine). In the case of Avengers comics,
the illustration that fills this space usually consists of one or more
Avengers characters--most often their faces, but sometimes full figure
drawings. That's what makes the corner box interesting when you're flipping
through your collection. The corner box isn't always a complete or accurate
reflection of the current Avengers cast, but it is a visual shorthand for
who and what the Avengers are. In short, the corner box illustrations give
us some idea of which characters Marvel regards as representative of the
Avengers. As such, they make for interesting browsing...
